Malaysia's movie posters SUCKS!
I just got some comment from someone regarding to the 'Quality of Malaysian Film Poster' which pointed to an aggresive movie company in Malaysia.
They said "Posters from the company is sucks and posters from another company is way better from theirs,"
Well, deep in my heart, i agreed with what they said, as I can see the quality from all of the local movie companies, and I can say (minus the movie companies that produced movies 100 years once, hehe) indeed their posters was suck.
Wait the minute...?! W. A. S?
Yeah, that's right, I once made some research about the company and like them, I said it was. With least skills and no creativity at all, the artworks brought disgrace to our local film poster design. Hence, one of the poster was awarded as Garbage of the year 2008 by people on the internet.
But.
I don't want to stretch this conversation, just want to say that indeed from artistic or aesthetic view, all of the posters from the company were made from garbage, but on commercial side? All those poster were brilliant.
Why?
Come to think about it, local people would say Hollywood posters are the best, they can attract people to watch the movie, that's why they can earn up to $100 million at least for their movie. Their posters did a good job. But come to think about it, (I was wondering lately) did my local fellows think of few BIG possibilties which for me and obviously the remedy for the Hollywood success wasn't just because of the poster?
Okay, first thing first. Geographically America is hundred percents bigger than Malaysia, hundreds times more citizen from Malaysia and they even called as 'The City of Entertainment'. So, even if the film has only a poster with the title of the film itself, it can collect 10 times or more than what we can collect.
Influence, does anyone think about it? You see, since hundreds years ago, western people has step into our civilizations (and others) and spread their way of life and stuff, they are famous with their exaggerations and big mouth, so people would notice any of their activity.
Lastly, (even though there are many other possibilities) with their big scale marketing opportunity, They can ignore the usage of the poster as one of the commercial medium, and turn the posters and below the line stuff into a masterpiece, as they don't have to worry about the Arts ruined their film promotion, which most of them depend on the Actors, Actresses, Scriptwriters or even the Directors to attract audiences.
Bottom line is, the direction of the promotion in western country is more on the technical or the production side of the movie, yet in Malaysia, we have to use most all of the methods we have (controversies, posters, trailers etc) to promote the movie, which left the posters (especially) go towards commercial value more than aesthetics value.
So for this reason, I'm down with that chinese producer's strategy which uses the posters more on the commercial side and have to leave the arts behind (even though he loves arts and beauty). For all the people who said *** posters are sucks, think again bro, as you can see the local posters which won FFM only grab less than RM3 million but that company collects RM20 million in total last year (2009).
Hindi? Chinese? Japan? All of them are big country as well, no big deal. Malaysia only have 27 million people, they have hundreds million guys...
